Childhood Cathedral — How does the house you grew up in show up on your map?

An old battered cathedral sitting in the middle of a field of bristly yellowed grass.

It’s not a large structure. From the outside it appears forgotten. Like the weeds surrounding it could enter and pray given time and opportunity.

But it’s not empty.

Inside is light. There’s space, freedom, and growth.

And just like in any house of worship there’s struggle, pain, and guilt. Frustration with the divine process which is often invisible to my eyes.

This is my childhood home and it appears as a cathedral on my map.

How does the house you grew up in appear on your inner map?

Does it even appear at all? For some it might not. And that’s ok.

But for me my childhood home shows up often in my subconscious (I dreamt about it last night).

It is the setting of many of my dreams and nightmares. A source of unresolved feelings and blissful memories. It is a black hole of influence on my life.

That would be one way to discover the role of your childhood home on your map.

Ask yourself: Do I feel strongly about? Do I think of it often (consciously or unconsciously)?

Then ask yourself: Why?

It’s ok if your answer is bullshit or surface at first. Go deeper when you’re ready. You’ll find answers and more questions the more you poke around.

Tomorrow, I’ll dig in to some old journal entries associated with my childhood home and see what comes up for me.
